Since 2009, there has been a consistent upward trend in the number of academic staff being reported as teaching-only. The discussion paper Teaching-focused academic appointments in Australian universities: recognition, specialisation or stratification? was commissioned by the OLT to examine the reasons for this growth and the likely impact on the quality of higher education learning and teaching.

The Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research, the Hon Chris Bowen MP, has announced that funding of $12.4 million is available to enhance the training of mathematics and science teachers as part of the Investing in Science and Maths for a Smarter Future initiative,.
